Creating a Hazard Analysis - JHA, JSA, SSOW

This article explains how to create a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) record (also referred to as a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Safe System of Work (SSOW)) in the Assure platform. The Job Hazard Analysis module sits within the Risk area of Assure and is a sub-module of the Risk module. The JHA form shares a similar field structure to the Activity Risk Assessment form, with two key differences: the JHA uses Author fields (rather than Assessor fields), and it includes two unique sections: Job Steps, Hazards and Controls and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). The PPE section uses picklist dropdowns, the values for which are managed via the Picklist Data Dictionary. A Summary section is also available on the form. This article covers the Assure main system workflow only. For AssureGO+ Questionnaire configuration of the JHA module, refer to the companion article.

Cross-module scope: This article is scoped to the Job Hazard Analysis sub-module within the Risk module in the Assure main system. The PPE picklist values are managed in the Picklist Data Dictionary (Settings > System Configuration > Picklist Data Dictionary).

 

Prerequisites

  • Active Assure user account with Read and Write permissions for the Risk module, Job Hazard Analysis sub-module.
  • To add or modify PPE picklist values, the Manage Picklist Data Dictionary Supervisor Privilege is required.

 

Creating a Job Hazard Analysis Record

Step 1 - Navigate to the Job Hazard Analysis Module

Navigate to the Risk Assessment Module: Modules > Risk > Job Hazard Analysis.

Click the New Record icon.

The fields available on the JHA form are similar to those of the Activity Risk Assessment. This article highlights the noticeable differences on the JHA module form. 
 
Key difference - Author Fields:
Author fields are available within the JHA form, replacing the Assessor fields.

Job Steps, Hazards and Controls

The Job Steps, Hazards and Controls section is unique to the JHA module. Each entry in this section captures a single job step alongside the associated hazards and controls.
The available fields within the Job Hazard Analysis Hazards and Controls sub-section include:
  • Step (mandatory)
  • Potential Hazards (mandatory)
  • Control Measures
  • Additional Control Measures
  • People Affected
  • How is the Person Affected
  • Pre-Control Risk Factor
  • Post Control Risk Factor

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Personal protective equipment being used or required for the JHA can be highlighted.
Picklist dropdowns are available for each PPE item. Values can be added to these if required within the Picklist Data Dictionary, which can be found under Settings > System Configuration > Picklist Data Dictionary > Job Hazard Analysis PPE Categories

The Summary section provides a consolidated overview of the Job Hazard Analysis record. Complete this section with any overall conclusions, sign-off details, or additional context relevant to the assessment.
