This article explains the Block Editor (the content creation tool used to build Stages and Resources in Evotix Learn). It describes what the Block Editor is, which Stage types use it, all available block types and their functions, and the three methods for adding blocks to a Stage or Resource. The Block Editor is the primary authoring tool for Article Stages and is available as a supplementary tool in Audio Visual (AV) Stages, PDF Stages, and Resources. This workflow is scoped entirely within Evotix Learn and does not require any configuration in Assure.
This video introduces the Block Editor, explaining how administrators can create and customise content within Learn. It covers formatting options, embedding media, and structuring engaging learning materials.
You can watch this video for an overview to learn about this topic or keep reading the article below.
Prerequisites
- Administrator or Content Administrator access to the Learn back-end admin interface.
- A Stage or Resource must already be created or in progress. The Block Editor is accessed from within the admin page of the relevant Stage or Resource.
What is the Block Editor?
| Stage Type | Block Editor Usage |
|---|---|
| Article Stage | Primary tool -- all content is built using the Block Editor |
| Audio Visual (AV) Stage | Optional -- add supplementary text, images, or files below the featured video or audio |
| PDF Stage | Optional -- add supplementary content below the mandatory PDF |
| SCORM Stage | Optional -- add supplementary content alongside the SCORM package |
| Quiz Stage | Not used for question content -- Quiz Stages use the Quiz Builder instead |
| Resources | Primary tool -- same process as Article Stages |
Text and Structure
- Paragraph -- The foundational content block. The Paragraph block allows administrators to add styled, aligned, and hyperlinked text to a Stage or Resource.
- Heading -- Breaks up content and highlights different topics using headings.
- List -- Adds bulleted or numbered lists. List items can be indented to ensure all information is presented clearly.
- Quote -- Adds a relevant quote to highlight a point within the Stage.
- Table -- Adds data or a grid of text and images to the body of a Stage.
Media
- Image -- Adds images to the body of the Stage. Images provide an alternative way to deliver content, condensing information that might otherwise require several sentences into a single visual.
- Video -- Adds videos that play inline within the Stage body, providing visual demonstrations to support the written content.
- File -- Adds downloadable files to the Stage body. Learners can open and download files to their device.
- Embeds -- Allows external files, videos, and pages to be embedded within the Stage page.Important: Media and files embedded using the Embeds block must have
<iframe>tags on either side of the URL for the embed to function correctly.
Layout
- Columns -- Arranges content in a multi-column layout. Columns are particularly useful when text needs to appear alongside an image.
- Group -- Groups multiple blocks together so they can be moved as a single unit on the admin page, making content organisation easier.
- Spacer -- Adds vertical space between content sections to break up the Stage and improve visual presentation.
Advanced
Custom HTML -- Allows custom HTML code to be added directly to the body of a Stage, enabling specific custom components to be included.
Adding Blocks to a Stage or Resource
- Click the '+' button in the top-left corner of the admin page.
- Click the '+' button at the left or right end of a blank block row.
- Press '/' when a blank block is active.
Notes and Warnings
- Embeds require iframe tags: When using the Embeds block to add external media or pages, the URL must be wrapped in
<iframe>tags on either side. Without these tags, the embed will not display correctly. - Block Editor content is not mandatory in non-Article Stages: In AV, PDF, and SCORM Stages, any content added via the Block Editor is supplementary and not required for learners to complete the Stage. Only the featured video, audio, or PDF linked via the dedicated media section is mandatory.
- Per-block translations: Article Stages, AV Stages, PDF Stages, and Resources use per-block translations. The language button within each individual block's toolbar allows administrators to add translated content for that specific block. This is different from Quiz Stages and SCORM Stages, which use page-wide translations.
Block order can be rearranged: Blocks can be dragged and reordered on the admin page, allowing administrators to adjust the content layout before publishing.
