Summary
Interests in Learn are configurable categories that help organize and filter training content. Administrators use Interests to group related training topics logically, enabling learners to discover and access relevant content more efficiently based on their roles, responsibilities, or preferences.
Interests in Learn help tailor content to users’ needs by grouping related training topics, making it easier to find what matters most.
Prerequisites
- Administrator or content manager access to the Learn platform
- Existing content structure or plan for organizing training topics
- Understanding of learner roles and training categorization needs
Problem/Intent
Why use Interests?
Organizations often have diverse training content covering multiple topics, roles, or departments. Without a clear categorization system, learners struggle to find relevant training, and administrators cannot effectively assign or recommend content.
Interests solve this by:
- Grouping related training topics into logical categories
- Allowing learners to filter content by relevance
- Enabling administrators to tailor content delivery based on user needs
- Improving content discoverability and user engagement
Steps
1. Access the Interests Configuration
- Log in to the Learn platform as an administrator.
- Navigate to Admin Settings or Content Management (exact path depends on platform version).
- Select Interests from the configuration menu.
2. Create a New Interest
- Click Add New Interest or Create Interest.
- Enter a clear, descriptive Interest Name (e.g., "Health & Safety," "Fire Safety," "Environmental Compliance").
- Optionally, add a Description to clarify the scope or purpose of the Interest.
- Save the Interest.
3. Assign Content to an Interest
- Navigate to the training content, course, or resource you want to categorize.
- Open the content settings or properties.
- Select the relevant Interest(s) from the available list.
- Save the changes.
Note: A single piece of content can be assigned to multiple Interests if it is relevant to more than one category.
4. Configure User Access or Visibility (Optional)
- Depending on platform capabilities, you may filter which Interests are visible to specific user groups.
- Navigate to User Management or Interest Permissions.
- Assign Interests to user roles, departments, or individual learners.
- Save the configuration.
5. Review and Test
- Log in as a test user or use a preview mode.
- Verify that Interests appear correctly in the learner interface.
- Confirm that filtering by Interest displays the appropriate training content.
- Adjust categorization as needed.
Notes & Warnings
- Interest names should be clear and intuitive to ensure learners understand what content they will find.
- Avoid creating too many Interests, as this can overwhelm users and reduce usability.
- Review Interests regularly to ensure they remain relevant as content evolves.
- Changing an Interest assignment may affect user notifications or learning pathways if automated assignments are in place.
Examples
Example 1: Creating an Interest for Health & Safety
- Navigate to Admin Settings > Interests.
- Click Add New Interest.
- Enter "Health & Safety" as the Interest Name.
- Add a description: "Training related to workplace health, safety procedures, and compliance."
- Save the Interest.
- Assign relevant courses (e.g., "Fire Safety Training," "First Aid Basics") to this Interest.
Example 2: Assigning Multiple Interests to a Course
- Open a course titled "Environmental Management Systems."
- Navigate to the course settings.
- Select Interests: "Environmental Compliance" and "ISO 14001."
- Save the changes.
- Users filtering by either Interest will now see this course.
Example 3: Filtering Content by Interest (Learner View)
- Learner logs in to Learn.
- Navigates to the Training Catalog or Interests section.
- Selects "Fire Safety" from the Interest filter.
- Only courses tagged with "Fire Safety" are displayed.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Cause | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Interest does not appear in the learner view | Interest not assigned to any content | Assign at least one course or resource to the Interest. Verify visibility settings. |
| Content assigned to wrong Interest | Incorrect Interest selected during configuration | Edit the content settings and reassign the correct Interest(s). |
| Too many Interests causing confusion | Over-categorization | Consolidate similar Interests into broader categories. Review with stakeholders. |
| User cannot see assigned Interest | Permissions or user role restrictions | Check user group assignments and Interest visibility settings in Admin Settings. |
| Changes to Interests not reflected immediately | Caching or delayed synchronization | Clear browser cache or wait for the system to refresh. Contact support if issue persists. |
